Location

A city with a close sense of community where rich natural surroundings and full urban functions exist in perfect harmony

Eniwa City is located midway between Sapporo, the prefectural capital, and New Chitose Airport.  Backed by an efficient traffic network, it has been growing as a major city in central Hokkaido.  The city is also a place of beauty, with abundant water from limpid streams that flow from the mountains and forests in the adjacent Shikotsu-Toya National Park.  In this town blessed with a harmony of urban functions and nature, the citizens of Eniwa strive to make the city an even better place while enjoying the changing seasons and a close sense of community.

Industry

Eniwa's industry has been steadily developing, taking advantage of its proximity to Sapporo and New Chitose Airport.

 

AgricultureAgriculture

In Eniwa City, agriculture has developed mainly around rice cultivation and dairy farming.
In recent years, profitable urban agriculture such as the cultivation of vegetables and flower
seedlings has become popular.  Resident-led town development as a city of flowers helps
to increase the shipments of flower seedlings.

                                    Currently, there are seven industrial parks in Eniwa City, where approximately 260 
                                    companies operate plants.  The city's prime location between Sapporo, the prefectural 
                                    capital, and New Chitose Airport, as well as traffic accessibility, abundant water and 
                                    a good support system  for incoming companies have been cited as the reasons for the 
                                    success in attracting these companies.

In order to revitalize shopping streets, various efforts have been made, including the
organization of an executive committee that examines revitalization measures and the
new utilization of vacant stores to expand shopping streets to be more community focused.

We strive to make the city a place where everyone can lead a worthwhile life, raise children without anxiety and live in good health.

                                     To ensure health and safety for everyone, various measures and projects have been
                                     implemented, including the establishment of the Kogane Fureai Center, which has 
                                     a multipurpose function for intergenerational exchange; Tayoreru, which is a regional
                                     comprehensive center supporting senior citizens' lives; and the SOS Network Project, 
                                     which strives for the early detection and protection of senior citizens with dementia.

Childcare is supported through five daycare centers and three Child Rasing Support Centers, as well as Minna no Hiroba and Junkai Hiroba, programs held at various facilities in the city.  For children who need assistance in the process of growing, the Child Development Support Center provides help.  Book Start and Book Start Plus are also popular literacy projects.

                                       Eniwa City supports residents' health through the Health Center, and is committed 
                                       to enhancing emergency medical service, incuding the establishment of the Night
                                       Emergency Clinic, which provides medical care for acute illness at night in cooperation
                                       with the Eniwa Medical Association, and the improvement of emergency medical
                                       technicians in skills.

 

 

Culture

Eniwa City is also an academic town with approximately 4,000 students at its unversity and technical colleges.

technical colleges, which produce outstanding personnel in various fields.  The city is
committed to improving the reading environment as a base for learning, and has assigned
certified librarians to all of its elementary and junior high schools―the first in Hokkaido.

Rurumappu Nature Park Fureland is a farm park with 100 sections for residents
to experience farming.  It also encompass park golf courses totaling 54 holes, providing
a place for people of all ages to enjoy themselves.  A variety of events such as resident
participation programs are to be held.

 

 

Collaboration

We share the same goal and work together with citizens to promote town development.

 

Eniwa Chie Net                                  “Eniwa Chie Net

                                  A human resources registration system aimed at making use of the knowledge 
                                  and experiences of local residents for town development.  The city launched a 
                                  website in 2012 after spending a year planning its content with residents.  The 
                                  website has been used as an information tool for civic activities.

In order to promote resident participation in town development, the Mayor visits each
area to hear the opinions of residents.   This project began in 2010, targeting all city
residents.  Eniwa City will maintain dialogues with many city residents.

            With the aim of revitalizing the city, Eniwa Marche has been held since 2011 
            with the participation of city residents, who plan open and operate stores.

Sister-city exchange

We promote friendship exchanges in which citizens play a key role.

 

International exchange Timaru, New ZealandInternational exchange | Timaru, New Zealand

Eniwa and Timaru established a sister-city relationship in 2008 amid the rising
momentum toward international exchange after a partnership was formed by both
cities' chambers of commerce and industry for the International Friendship Chamber
of Commerce and Industry.  In 2011, both cities contributed donations to each
other to support the victims of the major earthquakes that occurred in both countries.

                                    The exchange began in 1986, and the Guiyang Japan-China Friendship Cherry 
                                    Blossom Garden was made in a park in Guiyang City in 2002 to symbolize the 
                                    friendship between the cities.  In 2007, two elementary school students were 
                                    dispatched to participate in the Japan-China Friendship City Elementary Student 
                                    Table Tennis Meet held in Beijing to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 
                                    normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China. The Mayor of 
                                    Eniwa, who went with the team, made a courtesy visit to Guiyang City.

 

 

Sister-city exchange Waki TownSister-city exchange | Waki Town

In 1979, Eniwa City established a sister-city relationship with Waki Town in Yamaguchi
Prefecture based on the strong historical ties between the municipalities, and both mayors
made a courtesy visit to each other.  This prompted exchanges at a civic level, and children
from both cities still continue to visit to each other every year.

 

 

 

Eniwa Citizens Charter
(Established on November 19, 1970)

We are citizens of Eniwa, where Mt.Eniwa stands tall.
We recall the hardships of our ancestors in this land extending around the Izari River and the Shimamatsu River, and wish on fragment lilies of the valley for each other's happiness, and declare the Citizens Charter here to develop this city with the power of every citizen.

We shall love our own jobs and work hard while staying healthy.

We shall respect each other and build warm families.

We shall love nature and develop the city as a beautiful verdant town.

We shall observe the rules and develop the city as a comfortable town to live.

We shall train our intellect and develop the city as a culturally rich town.
